Throughout June, the exterior of the Ponoka Civic Centre (5604 50 St.) will be lit up with coloured lights from sunset to sunrise to recognize the following events.
June 2 to 8: Recreation and Parks Month and BGC Club Day
Green lights will be projected onto the building this week for Recreation and Parks Month and for Boys and Girls Club (BGC) Day on June 6.
Ponoka town council passed two motions last week proclaiming that June is Recreation and Parks Month and June 6 is BGC Club Day.
Recreation and Parks Month is a province-wide initiative that promotes outdoor play, local parks and community connection through recreation. BGC Club Day recognizes and celebrates Boys and Girls Club Wolf Creek in Ponoka.
June 9 to 15: Pride Month
The Town of Ponoka will recognize and celebrate Pride Month by projecting the pride colours onto the outside of the Ponoka Civic Centre from June 9 to 15 sunset until sunrise each evening.
The town says it is committed to being a "welcoming, inclusive and caring community."
June 16 to 22: National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day
In the spirit of reconciliation and in recognition that June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, the colour orange will be reflected onto the outside of the Ponoka Civic Centre this week. These events celebrate the traditions, cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis people.
June 23 to July 1: Canada Day
The colour red will be projected onto the exterior of the building this week to mark Canada Day on July 1.
"These special dates and occasions pay tribute to Ponoka’s rich history of respecting differences and diversity within our great community,” said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson in a press release.
