The Ponoka Community Inter-Company Basketball League tournament runs May 4 in the St. Augustine School gym.

Things get underway at 11 a.m.

Among the 10 teams participating this year are the AJ Perez /Dustine Quiambao team; the Josh Capistrano/Gene Lockridge team; the Christian Acosta/Nathan Padilla team and finally the Justine Paras/Hendrix Derepite Team, said Ronaldo Derepite, who is organizing the event along with Joel Jimenez.

“The primary objective of our basketball program is to promote physical activity, teamwork, leadership, and discipline among all individuals,” he said, adding he expects about 100 people to take part altogether.

He encourages the public to come out and cheer on the teams.

“By providing access to organized sports activities, we aim to contribute to the holistic development of participants. Organizing basketball leagues for various age groups will also allow participants to apply their skills in competitive environments,” he explained.

This will enhance their basketball abilities, and teach important lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience, he said.

Derepite said the league runs for two months from May 4 to the end of June when there will be an elimination round, semifinal, and championship game).

The league was launched in 2011, and anyone is welcome to join.
