Ponoka Drop-In Centre is holding a monthly grocery raffle

Draws will alternate between Hammy's and Paul's No Frills grocery stores

Each month, local residents can support the Ponoka Drop-In Centre while landing a chance to win a $500 grocery voucher.

A draw for the monthly grocery raffle will be held the final Friday of the month (except for this month, when it will be held on Feb. 27).

Tickets are $5 each.

Draws will alternate between Hammy's and Paul's No Frills grocery stores, said Doug Gill, president of the Ponoka Drop-In Centre.

The first draw, which was made on Jan. 31 at Hammy's, was won by Ponoka resident Lisa Nadon.

Gill said proceeds from the raffle, which sold out in just three weeks for the January draw, will support ongoing maintenance and programming at the Ponoka Drop-in Centre.

The idea for the raffle came from the realization that some folks are struggling with the cost of food these days, he said.

"We plan to sell 400 tickets each month," he said. "The money stays in the community, too - we are looking at doing some renovations at the drop-in, and it will also help with maintenance costs. We need to stay on top of those.

"It's also a nice way to help put groceries in the hands of those who need a break."

The raffle runs each month of the year, except for July and August, said Gill. Draw winners also don't have to use the full vouchers all at once at either store.

In the meantime, Gill said the community has already shown strong support for the initiative.

"We are really impressed with the response."

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Ponoka Drop-In Centre (5015 46 Ave.), or from members of the executive.
