It may be the middle of winter, but Ponoka Jubilee Library staffers are aiming to provide a fun family event with the Family Carnival Fundraiser on Feb. 22.

Things kick off at 12:30 p.m. and run through to 3:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 per adult or $10 per family. There will be lots of crafts like candle and mask-making, and games such as bingo and giant Jenga, plus popcorn, cotton candy and prizes, said Tiffany Toma, the library's program coordinator.

"We have never had a family carnival before - it came up in discussion, and we thought it would be fun to have a day where families could come in and we would have different crafts and activities," she said.

"We wanted to have something to get the community excited, and something fun for people to do for an afternoon. We wanted to bring some joy to people's lives!"

Also, staff will be launching the community survey that day as well.

"We will be collecting feedback from our patrons on their needs and wants, so as to better serve our citizens," said Toma, adding that every three years or so, staff re-evaluate services to make sure they are in line with what folks are looking for.

Meanwhile, other coming events at the library include the annual Blind Date with a Book initiative.

"We select a number of materials and you get just a snippet of what it's about," she explained. "It's wrapped up with a little tag that has a short description.

"So you pick your book based on these little tags. There is a survey inside you can fill out, to see if you liked your 'date' or not," she added with a laugh.

"Every ballot you fill out for every book you read enters you into prize draws at the end of the month," she said, adding the prizes are donated from a number of local businesses in town.

"It's quite popular. I think we had about 100 participants in total last year," she said.

"It's a lot of fun to do, and it helps people break out into different genres or writing styles - something you may not have picked out on your own just might catch your eye in this format. You never know!"

Toma said the library is also starting up an adult reading challenge, which goes on the entire year.

"You get a little booklet, and there are 10 prompts per page. Once you complete a page, you get to enter a ballot for a prize at the year's end," she explained.

"For example, a prompt may say, 'read a book that has won a Pulitzer Prize', 'read a book that was written the year you were born', 'read a book that was a debut novel, or that was written by your favourite author'.

"Again, this is one of those things that broadens a person's reading horizons."
