Ponoka's Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated its 55th anniversary since amalgamating from May 16 to 18, with many activities, special services, music, banquets and special guests and visitors.
Trinity Lutheran Church became a reality when three Lutheran congregations in Ponoka decided to amalgamate into one congregation.
The three churches were Grace Lutheran, First English Lutheran and our Saviour's Lutheran.
It all began in the fall of 1969 when a committee was appointed representing these three congregations to explore the possibility of amalgamation. This led to months of discussion and planning.
On May 17, 1970, the three congregations officially joined to become one church: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. It is believed that this was the first and only such amalgamation in Canada.
The first service was held in the Ponoka United Church with Pastor John Zimmerman officiating. For the next five years, services were held in St. Mary's Anglican Church.
On Oct. 4, 1970, Pastor Otto Goos was installed as the first pastor.
Plans were made to sell the existing properties and possibly purchase property to build a new and bigger church. Property was purchased in Lucas Heights and building began.
The new church was dedicated on June 1, 1975. The house next door was purchased as a parsonage and land for more parking. An addition was built to add a fellowship hall, offices and an elevator. This addition was completed in 1990.
The current pastor is Jay Lutz, serving Trinity since April, 2021.
Together we will always remember and cherish the years of history, traditions and deep faith that have joined us together.
