Ponoka’s annual Top Gun Horse Sales high seller goes for $46k

As usual, bidders came from far and wide

Organizers behind the annual Top Gun Horse Sales auction, held this past weekend at the Calnash Ag Event Centre, were thrilled with the support shown to the event.

The sale ran as a live auction with the option to view and bid online, said Top Gun Horse Sales owner and operator Jordan Dodds.

“We started at high noon, and we were sold out by 6:30 p.m. on Saturday,” he said.

A 2013 APHA Palomino Gelding named DF Frosty Bandido was this year’s top-selling horse, going for $46,000 which was consigned by a local family.

Altogether, there were 189 horses featured at the event, and the top 10 average was $39,000.

Dodds said the Calnash Centre was jam-packed for the sale.

“It was unbelievable — the building was full. And also for the preview night, there was an outstanding turn-out, too, which was great,” he said.

The online audience was about the same as last year — around 15,000 people.

Like past sales, bidders came from far and wide, from California, South Carolina, Quebec, Alaska, Vancouver Island, and everywhere else in between, Dodds said.

For Dodds, planning for the main event is essentially a year-long deal.

“We were also glad to see the local businesses who sponsored us, and helped us out,” he said.

“My team that helps me are also second-to-none.”
