UPDATE: RCMP investigate suspicious death in Samson Cree Nation; homicide charges laid

UPDATE — Following an investigation into a suspicous death after a body was found in a ditch in Maskwacis on Sept.9, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has identified the victim and laid charges against a man in what has now been deemed a homicide.

UPDATE — Following an investigation into a suspicous death after a body was found in a ditch in Maskwacis on Sept.9, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has identified the victim and laid charges against a man in what has now been deemed a homicide.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Jordie Buffalo-Crier, a resident of Samson Cree Nation.

As a result of the investigation on Sept.13, RCMP arrested 20-year-old Kieran Keith Lightning in Wetaskiwin and charged him with Second Degree Murder.

Lightning has been remanded into custody and is set to appear in court on Sept. 29, 2022, at Wetaskiwin Provincial Court.

ORIGINAL STORY — Maskwacis RCMP and the RCMP Major Crimes Unit are investigating a suspicious death in Maskwacis after a body was found in Samson Cree Nation on Sept. 9.

The morning of Sept.9, Maskwacis RCMP were notified that a body had been discovered in a ditch along a rural road on the Samson Cree Nation.

RCMP state that the initial investigation deemed the death as suspicious and the Major Crimes Unit is now investigating.

An autopsy for is scheduled for Sept.13, in Edmonton, after which the identity of the deceased may be released.

The investigation is still in its early stages and anyone with information is asked to contact the Maskwacis RCMP at 780-585-4600.
