RCMP officers involved in shooting of 15-year-old in Wetaskiwin

The youth had called police for help about an hour prior to his death

A 15-year-old resident of Samson Cree Nation who had called the police, fearing for his life on Aug. 30, died after an altercation with RCMP members.

At 12:28 am., Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report from a caller that said people were following him and trying to kill him, according to a release.

At 1:22 a.m., police located an individual on 56 St. and 37A Ave. and approached him.

Police stated the individual was in possession of several weapons, which officers confiscated.

According to the release, a confrontation then occurred which resulted in two officers discharging their service firearms and the individual being struck. Officers reportedly transitioned to life saving measures, giving first aid and EMS was called.

EMS transported the individual to the hospital however the individual died at the hospital. The deceased caller was identified as a 15-year-old resident of Samson Cree Nation.

The director of law enforcement was then notified, causing the deployment of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to oversee the investigation.

The RCMP will be providing full support to the ASIRT investigators, noted the release. 

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s review processes have been launched to gather a full account of what took place during the incident, including police training, policy, and response.
