Mostly co-operative weather has seen good usage of the cross-country ski and walking trails at the Ponoka Golf Club this winter.
"The trails are available to the public, and they've been fairly busy when the weather cooperates and it's not blowing and icy. But it's not just cross country ski trails - we have the walking trails, too," said Ryan Moore, head professional at the Ponoka Golf Club.
Of course, there is no charge to use the trails, and they are open 24/7, he added.
"We had that early and heavy snowfall early on, so we were able to open them up in early December, which is kind of standard," he said, adding with the milder conditions last year, conditions weren't always ideal until early in 2024.
"So it was nice to have that extra month," he said, adding that plenty of snow is needed for optimal conditions, and also helps with the consistent freezing and thawing which just makes conditions a bit on the icy side.
The walking trails are beside the cross country ski trails, and they are all easily accessible and well-marked with signage, he said.
"At the bottom of the driveway there is a parking lot, and that is where (the trails) start and finish."
Meanwhile, there are two loops to be explored through the natural crest and hills of the club’s property.
"The shorter loop is just under two kilometres and the larger loop is about 3.5 kilometres," said Moore.
"Come out and enjoy them - the restaurant is open all year as well."
It is important to remember Ponoka Golf Club does not rent cross-country skiing or snowshoes.
