Following a cybersecurity breach of the Town of Ponoka’s digital network by an unauthorized third party on Feb. 20, the town continues to work with external cybersecurity experts who are conducting an ongoing forensic investigation.

“When the cybersecurity incident occurred, the town acted immediately to contain the breach and engaged cybersecurity experts to assist with containment, remediation and to initiate a forensic investigation to determine what, if any, personal data was impacted,” noted a release.

“As that investigation continues, any individuals or businesses that may have had confidential or personally identifiable information exposed will be notified. The forensic investigation involves a thorough review of the potentially impacted systems and data.”

This incident has been reported to law enforcement and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.

The town has also implemented enhanced security measures to better prevent an incident of this nature from reoccurring.
