Verdict for 2 accused in killing of Ponoka teen set for next month

The two Wetaskiwin men accused of killing a Ponoka teen three summers ago will learn the verdict in their case next month. 

Ponoka resident Antwon Bull, 19, died after an altercation 40 Ave., east of 56 St., in Wetaskiwin on July 8, 2022.

Bull succumbed to his injuries later that evening in hospital.

Adam James Cook, 30, and Morgan Maslin, 22, both from Wetaskiwin, were charged with second degree murder.

Their trial was held from Dec. 2 to 20, 2024, at the Wetaskiwin Court of King's Bench.

The judge is set to hand down his decision on March 24, 2025, at the Wetaskiwin Court of King's Bench. 

Manslaughter conviction

Amie Lindsay Twins, 31, a resident of Louis Bull Tribe, initially charged with second degree murder, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced on Nov. 5, 2024. 

Maskwacis resident Daniel Adrian Johnson, 34, was stabbed to death at a residence in Louis Bull First Nation on July 30, 2023.

Twins was sentenced to four years, minus 436 days served in pre-trial custody at an enhanced credit of 1.5 for every day, leaving 806 days remaining to be served. 

Assault sentenced

One of the accused in a stabbing assault in Ponoka has been sentenced while charges against the second accused were withdrawn. 

On Oct. 13, 2023, Ponoka RCMP responded to a report of a serious assault in a residential area in town.

The victim had suffered serious injuries, including stab wounds, and was taken to hospital.

Cree Lightfoot, 22, and Tracy Lightfoot, 49, were both known to the victim.

They were both originally charged with attempted murder, failure to comply with a release order and aggravated assault. 

The summary disposition was held on Jan. 24 at the Wetaskiwin courthouse.

Tracy was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to 820 days, minus time served in pre-trial custody.

With 594 days already served, Tracy was sentenced to 226 days imprisonment.

The other two counts were withdrawn.

All charges against Cree were withdrawn.

Soosay murder

Maskwacis resident Donovan Kyle Rain, 33, charged with the second degree murder, was scheduled to enter his election and plea on Jan. 16 at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice, but it was set over to Feb. 13. 

On Feb. 11, 2024, Maskwacis RCMP were alerted to a deceased person in a residence on 6 Mile in Samson Cree Nation.

Maskwacis resident Donovan Rain, 33, was eventually charged with second degree murder of the victim, 26-year-old Gordelle Soosay. 

Flight from police

Jeff Edward Medd, a 40-year-old resident of Leduc County, and Corey Garrett Peers, a 35-year-old resident of Wainwright, Alta., are facing several charges including flight from police and possession of stolen property.

They had a court date on Jan. 16, 2025, in Wetaskiwin, to set a date.

They are now scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Feb. 13 in Wetaskiwin. 

Assault with a weapon

Jeral Maurice Thomas Rabbit, 25, of Montana First Nation, charged with assault and weapons-related offences, now has a trial date.

Rabbit is charged with assault with a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon contrary to an order, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

He pleaded guilty on Dec. 6, 2024, via a legal agent, and is scheduled to appear for trial on Feb. 21, 2025, at the Ponoka Court of Justice.

Breton murder

Rimbey resident Shane Allen Marshall, 37, accused with second degree murder, was scheduled for a jury trial from Feb. 3 to 14, 2025, but it has now been set over to Sept. 15 to 25, 2025, at the Wetaskiwin Court of King's Bench. 

Breton RCMP were conducting a welfare check on a male at a rural property in Brazeau County on Oct. 17, 2022, when they located a deceased male, 67-year-old Robert Charles Marshall.
