Second accused sentenced in Wetaskiwin liquor store robbery

Maskwacis/Wetaskiwin murder, robbery and unlawful confinement court cases moving forward

Erin Bull, 27, has been sentenced to 997 days in jail after pleading guilty to robbing a liquor store in Wetaskiwin last fall. 

On Aug. 16, 2024, Bull pleaded guilty to robbery and being disguised with intent. He was sentenced on Oct. 29, 2024 at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice. 

He pleaded not guilty to assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and those charges were withdrawn. 

The sentence imposed was 1440 days minus 443 days served in pre-trial custody, as well as a firearms prohibition. Bull is also to have no contact with Devin Thom or co-accused Eric Okeymow. 

Okeymow, 30, a resident of Maskwacis, was convicted of robbery on Sept. 10, 2024, and received a 15-month jail sentence. A second charge of assault with a weapon was withdrawn.

On Aug. 22, 2023, Wetaskiwin RCMP received a 911 call from an employee of a liquor store in Wetaskiwin. Two males had allegedly entered the store, deployed bear spray in the face of the cashier, and stole multiple bottles of liquor before fleeing the scene. 

The employee was treated for bear spray exposure but was otherwise uninjured.  

Fleeing from police

Two individuals charged with fleeing from police, theft of a motor vehicle, assault and various other offences after leading officers on a chase from Wetaskiwin to Red Deer County on Oct. 10, 2024 are scheduled to appear on Nov. 5.

Jeff Edward Medd, a 40-year-old resident of Leduc County, has been charged with two counts of fleeing from police, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, five firearms-related offences, and assault of a peace officer. 

Corey Garrett Peers, a 35-year-old resident of Wainwright, Alta., has been charged with two counts of fleeing from police, possession of stolen property over $5,000, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and multiple weapons offences, as well as two counts of mischief causing damage, fraudulent concealment, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of failing to comply with a release order. 

They were both scheduled to enter an election and plea on Oct. 29, but no plea information on the file is available. The next court date is Nov. 5, 2024 at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice. 

Forcible confinement

Louis Bull resident Timothy Bull, 47, has been charged with forcible confinement, pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and multiple charges related to failing to comply with a release order.

On Oct. 18, shortly after 9:45 p.m., Maskwacis RCMP responded to a complaint of forcible confinement involving a firearm. Numerous RCMP resources were dispatched to the area.

The female victim, who called 911, was located hiding in a treeline outside of a residence on the Louis Bull Townsite.

Bull was scheduled to appear at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Oct. 21 but the matter was adjourned until Nov. 5, 2024.

A 17-year-old youth who can't be identified because he is a minor was charged with forcible confinement, pointing a firearm, assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a youth release order.

Firearm offences

A court case is proceeding for two suspects charged with several firearms-related offences stemming from a traffic stop in Wetaskin on Oct. 4, 2024. 

The Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit stated its members were watching a vehicle and occupants known to them. When officers conducted a traffic stop, members allegedly noticed a firearm in the vehicle. 

The two male occupants of the vehicle were arrested and taken into custody. 

Tyrone Tellis Lightning of Maskwacis is charged with various firearms offences including possession of a firearm in motor vehicle.

Justin Blake Simon, 35, of Maskwacis was charged with several firearms offences, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, two counts of possession contrary to order and failing to surrender authorization, as well as possession of crystal meth. 

Both accused had their initial court dates adjourned. 

Lightning is now scheduled to enter his election and plea on Nov. 7, 2024 at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice. 

Simon is to appear on Nov. 7 to set a date. 

Truck theft suspects

Louis Bull First Nation residents Colin Tyson Bull, 24, and Shaunelle Tawny Marilyn Okeymow, 31, have been charged with robbery and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

On Sept. 8, 2024, Maskwacis RCMP received a report that a female victim was assaulted and her vehicle, a 2023 Dodge truck, was stolen by two offenders on Louis Bull First Nation.
 
RCMP then received a report that the same suspects using the stolen vehicle may have shot a firearm at another witness near the Bear Hills Truck Stop on Highway 2.
 
RCMP located the vehicle and, with a police helicopter, maintained surveillance of the truck. The truck was observed pulling up to a residence on Louis Bull First Nation.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed and with the assistance of the Edmonton police tactical unit, all occupants exited the home and were taken into custody.

Both accused had their court dates in September adjourned. 

Bull is to speak to the court in Wetaskwin on Nov. 14, 2024. 

Okeymow is scheduled to enter her election and plea on Nov. 14 in Wetaskiwin.

Second degree murder

After being adjourned a couple of times, Chervaine Dean Saddleback, 24, charged with second degree murder, is scheduled to enter his election and plea on Nov. 28 at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice. 

On Jan. 28, 2024, Maskwacis RCMP was called to assist EMS with a 25-year-old man, who was then transported to hospital where he was declared deceased.

An autopsy determined that the manner of death was a homicide.

On Sept. 28, 2024, RCMP arrested Saddleback for the murder of Wyatt Omeasoo. Both the victim and the accused were residents of Maskwacis.

Beaumont murder case

Beaumont, Alta. resident Kenneth Skelly is charged with the second degree murder of his common-law spouse.

He was scheduled to appear at the Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench on Oct. 29 for a pre-trial conference but the matter was set over to Dec. 10, 2024.
