Ponoka Storm’s U15 Tier 2 girls showcased their exceptional talent during the Family Day Classic in Red Deer on Feb. 19.

Despite being one of the youngest teams at this level, their performance was strong.

Coach Lonny Behm praised the team’s growth, highlighting their transition from Tier 3 provincials champions to Tier 2 contenders this season.

“The tournament started with a tough 2-1 loss against SW Sting,” said Behm.

“We had five minutes at the start of the game where maybe nerves hit us, but for the next 45 minutes we played flawless soccer. It was our best game of the season.”

Their journey continued with a decisive 1-0 victory over Inter Edmonton, showcasing their dominance in possession.

In the final round-robin match, the Storm girls faced a physical challenge from Edmonton Victoria as they tried beating Ponoka off the pitch, but the Storms’ speed, style of play, and perseverance showed with a 2-1 win.

“This tournament tested our resilience,” said Behm.

“Being first years in U15 and having a few U13’s, the team was the youngest at the Tier 2 level. The girls proved they belong at this level. But they also know there’s room for even greater progress.”

Looking ahead, the team is gearing up for the provincial indoor tournament in March hosted in Edmonton, aiming to carry forward their momentum and strive for further success.

U11 boys impress in season opener

Meanwhile, Ponoka Storm’s U11 boys made a strong statement in their debut tournament of the season.

Co-coach Lonny Behm commended the team’s performance, highlighting their offensive prowess and cohesive play.

“For only playing together one other time this season, the results were very impressive,” he said.

“The way they played and developed together as a team will be beneficial for the coming outdoor season.”

Coach Brooke Van Wolde added the boys showed tremendous skill and determination.

“From a thrilling 8-8 draw against Beaumont to convincing victories over both Red Deer Renegade teams, they displayed remarkable teamwork,” she said.

Despite falling short in the gold medal match, the game was scoreless for the first 15 minutes before the Green Grenades broke the deadlock and carried onwards to win the game 5-0.

“For a team playing together for only the second time this season, their progress is remarkable,” added Van Wolde.

“These experiences will undoubtedly benefit them as they prepare for the outdoor season.”

U13 co-ed team shows heart

In another display of Ponoka Storm’s resilience, the U13 co-ed team faced tough competition against Tier 3 all-boys teams.

Despite facing challenges, they demonstrated sheer determination, teamwork, and, most importantly, had fun on the field.

Coach Brooke Van Wolde praised her team’s spirit, emphasizing the invaluable lessons learned from each game.

“Despite the results, our players showed incredible heart and camaraderie,” said Van Wolde.

“Their performance is a testament to the true essence of sportsmanship.”

Medal success and gratitude

Congratulations poured in for the U15 girls and U11 boys on their medal-winning performances, underscoring the overall success of Ponoka Storm teams during the tournament.

As the season progresses, Ponoka Storm invites soccer enthusiasts of all skill levels to join their ranks, promising an inclusive and rewarding experience for all players.
