A 58-year old man is in critical condition after the vehicle he was driving ran off the road on May 1. Ponoka Traffic RCMP and Ponoka Fire and Emergency Services arrived at the scene at approximately 7:21 a.m. to the single vehicle accident approximately 10 km north of Ponoka on Hwy 2 near the Menaik overpass.
Early investigation shows that it is believed a semi-tractor trailer unit driven by George Dirk was traveling northbound and ran off the road.
The tractor trailer broke through a guard rail into the east ditch and went down an embankment stopping in a pasture. The load remained intact but the semi-tractor caught on fire. Dirk was removed from the vehicle by a passerby. He was airlifted by STARS helicopter to the University of Alberta Hospital in critical condition.
Const. Mark Green from the Ponoka RCMP says that the investigation is ongoing and they are currently waiting for all of the statements. Charges are not anticipated at this time.
“We won’t know exactly what happened until we are able to speak with the driver,” said Green.
He also said that Dirk is expected to go in for surgery May 5. While the RCMP were on scene one lane of northbound traffic on Hwy 2 was closed for several hours.
