Rural crime prevention tips

Crime prevention is a shared responsibility, say police.

Residents are reminded of their role in preventing criminal activity:

• Lock up houses, sheds, vehicles and any other property that is easily accessible.

• Never leave running vehicles unlocked. Nearly half of the vehicle thefts in Alberta over the past year have had the keys left inside.

• Take photos and record serial numbers of property.

• If you see or suspect suspicious activity notify police immediately.

Telephone scams

The RCMP are receiving numerous complaints of telephone scams.

Those being targeted are primarily seniors with unknown suspects calling and claiming to be with Revenue Canada, the RCMP or many other associations in an attempt to obtain money.

Police advise residents to be aware of the risks.

“Do not send money or provide any banking information to them.”

“There is no need to report these phone calls unless you have already provided your credit card information or if you are missing money,” say RCMP.
