A male was taken into custody by Ponoka RCMP just before 10 a.m. on Sept. 26, after he was spotted on 48 Avenue and 51 Street wearing fatigues and body armour as well as what appeared to be a handgun in a holster strapped to his chest by an officer conducting patrols.
The man was crossing 51 Avenue when he was immediately confronted by the officer, who had recognized the suspect as having a weapons prohibition order.
The officer then called for backup, to which several officers responded, and the man was safely taken into custody. As many as 10 police vehicles were observed at the scene at the time.
After apprehending the man,the firearm was later identified as a BB gun.
With the information available at the time, it wasn’t believed the man was heading to any specific location or had any further criminal intent in mind, said RCMP Public Information Officer Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.
The man remains in custody and the RCMP will be filing charges, said Savinkoff.
