Ponoka County Regional Fire Services East District responded to a call of a car fully engulfed in flames in Riverside, on Nov. 3, in what is being deemed a suspicious fire.
The department received the call at 9:06 a.m. to the field south of 46 St., right behind Harvest Manor on 36 Ave. Close.
The 911 caller had stated someone had set fire to the vehicle, and when fire services arrived, no one was there and the small blue car was “fully involved,” said Donna Noble, Ponoka County protective services coordinator.
Due to frost and the coolness of the ground, the fire didn’t spread to the grass and was contained to the vehicle.
One tender truck and nine members were on scene for about 50 minutes before it was deemed extinguished and safe.
The scene was then turned over to the Ponoka RCMP, which had also responded to the incident.
The file is now under investigation by the RCMP.
The East District also responded to a motor vehicle collision between a vehicle and a tractor west of town on Highway 53, at 7:45 a.m. on Nov. 3.
Minor injuries were sustained by the driver of the car.
The department has responded to a few outside fire calls recently, and is currently averaging about three calls a day, including some emergency medical assists.
