Beva Hamilton has lost her battle with cancer.
The first-term Ponoka town councillor died Oct. 7 at the age of 57. She was elected to council in the October 2010 municipal election.
Flags around Ponoka were lowered to half-mast in her honour.
Mayor Larry Henkelman said council has reached out to the Hamilton family to offer support. While hospitalized, councillors visited Hamilton regularly.
“She will be sadly missed by her fellow councillors and by the community,” Henkelman said.
“She always did her research and was always well prepared before a meeting.”
A registered nurse, Hamilton was concerned with improving the delivery of services at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre and with senior citizens housing issues. A nurse for more than 35 years, she worked in the recovery unit at the Red Deer Regional Hospital centre and at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.
Beva Hamilton (neé Farnham) married grocer Jim Hamilton two years ago and is survived by her daughter, Martha Darwin; son, Brian Beagle; step-children; a sister and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a .m. Oct. 14 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church with interment in the Forest Home Cemetery.
