Pet owners in Ponoka can now take advantage of early bird discounted rates for animal licences.

All dogs and cats six months of age and older must be licensed annually in the Town of Ponoka, as per the Town’s Animal Control Bylaw No. 424-19.

The town says “an animal licence is your pet’s ticket home and helps ensure they can more easily be returned home safely.”

The Town’s animal control contractor is Old MacDonald Kennels. A licence helps the shelter reunite pets with their owners.

“Licensing also saves pet owners added cost if your animal accidentally escapes your property, which can result in a fine for failing to license your cat or dog,” said the town in a press release.

Receive the early bird rate on dog licences by renewing your dog’s licence for the 2022 year between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31.

The early bird rate also applies to new Ponoka residents who own a dog and/or cat as of Oct. 1, 2021 and first time animal owners of a dog and/or cat as of Oct. 1, 2021.

The early bird rates are $15 annually for spayed or neutered animals or $30 for unaltered animals.

Documented proof of spay or neuter is required to qualify for the discounted altered animal rate. This can include an official letter from your veterinarian or a receipt from the procedure.

Cat licences purchased this year by residents with cats owned prior to Oct. 1, 2021 do not expire until Dec. 31, 2022.

Early bird prices do not apply to existing cat owners who owned their pet prior to Oct. 1, 2021.

After December, 2022, cat licences will need to be renewed annually and will be eligible for early bird pricing.
