A unique, and difficult, fitness event will double as a fundraiser for kids’ participation in sport in Ponoka.

Brett McCaughey, owner/operator of Gun-It CrossFit, has three teams of six members taking part in a worldwide workout event — the 24-hour AMRAP (as many reps as possible) Challenge on Dec. 7.

“When it was brought up, there were a few interested,” she said.

“But when the idea of making it into a fundraiser was mentioned, we pretty much had 12 people already committed to taking part.”

McCaughey added that choosing Kidsport Ponoka as the charity of choice was easy, especially with many having been involved with the organization before and the connection between the event and promoting healthy recreational pursuits.

The event has already attracted some sponsors and donations, with McCaughey hoping to raise $6,000 — enough to support registration fees for 20 kids.

As for the challenge, it will have teams take on different movements each hour and attempt to reach 500 reps for one movement.

“It’s an event done in real-time,” she said, adding that due to the time change, the Ponoka group will be going from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“A live feed link will show the three movements that can be done in the next hour and, while we don’t know what ones will be coming, we have been given a list of movements that will be used as well as a list of equipment that will be needed.”

In addition, not each movement will equal one rep, McCaughey stated.

“The more skilled movements will get two reps for each one done, while lesser movements will mean doing it twice to earn one rep,” she said.

“That said, there are different levels, so it makes it possible for anyone of any age and any fitness level to participate.”

All three teams already have a sponsor — Re/Max Effort, Producer Profit Pumpers, Hobbema Dental Deadlifters — though more sponsors and donations are welcome, with pledge sheets available at the gym (located at the Aquaplex) and donation pages for many of the participants on Facebook.

“Anyone is welcome to stop by the gym throughout the 24 hours to cheer on, support and watch the competition live,” said McCaughey.

Those wishing to donate can contact McCaughey and there will also be someone from Kidsport Ponoka at the gym from 12 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 7 for anyone looking to make a donation.
