UPDATED – Tow restriction in Leduc County, QEII

Motorists advised to avoid driving on the QE2 in central Alberta, Leduc

The tow ban was lifted March 9 at 7 a.m.

UPDATE 3 – 12:55 p.m.

A tow restriction has been implemented in the Leduc area.

RCMP issued the restriction throughout the County of Leduc.

“All tow companies are advised that given the road/weather conditions presently on the QEII,” states RCMP. “Tow companies should not work toward removing vehicles from ditches unless directed by the RCMP.”

Police remind motorists to slow down and drive for the road conditions.

“When conditions are more favourable for recovering vehicles from ditches a notification will be sent out by the Leduc RCMP,” state police.

UPDATE 2

Conditions don’t seem to be getting better.

511 Alberta on Twitter states that northbound lanes on the QEII between 32 Street and Highway 11 are closed due to a jackknifed semi.

“Expect major delays. Use alternate route,” states the announcement.

Icy highway conditions in central Alberta are causing delays for motorists.

Officers with the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit are dealing with several collisions of vehicles that have gone off the road.

The evening snow fall from March 7, plus blowing snow has caused the roads to become icy and visibility limited, say officials.

On the 511 Alberta website it indicates that road conditions from Innisfail to Edmonton area are partly covered with snow or ice. Officials recommend motorists turn on their headlights and drive for the road conditions.

After Innisfail 511 Alberta states conditions are covered with snow and ice.

Blackfalds RCMP posted on social media to avoid travel altogether.

As of 10:30 a.m. crews were dealing with an incident on the QE2 that has traffic slowed down.
