January is mentoring month for mentoring organizations such as the Ponoka Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), and they’re joining other organizations to celebrate.
The month is all about recognizing the impact volunteer mentors make in the lives of young people and has the goal of recruiting, expanding and enhancing mentoring across the province.
Other participating organizations include 4-H and Boys and Girls Clubs.
There are various activities throughout the month to celebrate and thank mentors, and it’s all on social media, using the hashtag #MentoringMonth2020.
The month kicked off with “I am a Mentor Day” on Jan. 8, where mentors posted stories celebrating their roles.
Jan. 17 is international Mentoring Day, and everyone who has been affected by mentoring is encouraged to post a story on social media using the hashtag.
On Jan. 21, you can challenge your colleagues and friends to become a mentor on “Nominate a Mentor Day.”
Finally, if you have been impacted by a mentor, you’ll have a chance to express your appreciation on “Thank Your Mentor Day” on Jan. 31.
In 2019, the Ponoka BBBS served 91 children, making 100 matches.
There is currently a waiting list of about 25 children in need of mentors.
“We are just always looking for mentors,” said Morgen Chernick, program director.
Mentoring a child only takes one hour a week. Those interested can call BBBS at 403-783-3112.
