Leaders of Tomorrow nomination deadline approaching fast

The 13th annual Leaders of Tomorrow Awards Program, proudly sponsored by Encana, Volunteer Alberta, the Wild Rose Foundation, 4-H and Sunny 94, proudly recognizes the outstanding contributions the youth make to our community through their volunteerism and leadership.

If you know a student attending Kindergarten through Grade 12 who gives their time through their school, organization, their church, helping out a neighbour, or who acts as a positive role model to fellow students or friends, take the time to nominate them for this award.

Nomination forms are available at Ponoka schools, Ponoka Town office, Ponoka hospitals, Encana, Ponoka Jubilee Library, Bruce’s True Value, Accu Publishing and the Ponoka Youth Centre. Completed forms may be dropped off or mailed to the Centennial Centre for mental health and brain injury and the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre Volunteer Services, as outlined on the forms. The deadline for submissions is March 24.

The 2009 Leaders of Tomorrow Awards ceremony and celebration event will be taking place on Sunday, April 19 at the Kinsmen Community Centre from 1-3 p.m. with highly anticipated special guest speaker two-time Paralympic gold medalist, Lori Radke. Radke was born in Wetaskiwin but grew up in Ponoka where she graduated from PCHS in 1984 and furthered her education at U of A. Aside from receiving two gold medals at the Atlanta Games of 1996 and the Sydney, Australia Games in 2000, respectively, and a bronze medal at the Athens, Greece Games of 2004, Radke also received four consecutive gold medals at the World Championships and spent 15 years on the National Team. She currently resides in Calgary where she keeps busy by playing basketball for the Rocky Mountain Rollers, working as a physical therapist and raising seven-year-old son, Connor.

Aside from receiving highly deserved recognition and the opportunity to attend this ceremony, the 2009 nominees and one guest will also have the opportunity to participate in an overnight 4-H leadership workshop on May 8 and 9 at the Alberta 4-H Centre at Battle Lake.
