On Dec. 6, 2021, the presidents of the East and West 4-H Beef Clubs, Emily Cline and Carter Gustafson, along with some members of each club presented a cheque for $9,000 to the Make a Wish Foundation.

This was the money raised from the Charity Steer Raffle last year. Each year the clubs take turns raising a charity steer and the members sell tickets to raise funds for a member agreed upon charity.

Last year the charity was one very near and dear to our 4-H families’ hearts. Harper Cripps, an East club cleaver, and her family experienced the generosity of Make A Wish personally.

Harper is now eight years old but in the summer of 2017, she was diagnosed with cancer. She had A.L.L. leukaemia and had intensive treatment for two years at the Stollery in Edmonton and is now two years treatment free and in perfect health.

Harper was the recipient of a Make A Wish Trip in February, 2019. Her trip was to Legoland, Disney World and a number of other theme parks in Orlando, Florida.

The family stayed for a week at the greatest place on earth: the Give the Kids the World Village. They were just one of 150 families of sick kids that were staying at that resort that week.

Alex Cripps, Harper’s Dad said, “It was the most amazing trip a family could go on - especially families that have a sick child and it was so amazing to see the pure joy that those kids were able to enjoy every day while they were there,”

This year the Charity Steer prize will be divided into two cut and wrapped halves of beef with the proceeds going to The Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton and The Ponoka Food Bank.

Charity Steer Raffle tickets are available for purchase through any East or West 4-H Beef member. Winners will be drawn at our 4-H Show and Sale May 2 and 3, 2022 at the Cal-Nash Ag Event Centre.
