COVID-19 changed the dynamic of the annual Ponoka District 4-H Beef Show and Sale in the past two years, and although the online auctions were successful, the members are happy to be heading back into the ring this year.

The 2022 show and sale will be held at the Calnash Ag Event Centre on May 2 and 3.

The kids are excited to be able to show their projects in person, rather than just a video and pictures online, said district president Patrick Lentz.

“I think its important for them for after all the hard work they put in,” said Lentz, adding that the season for their projects from start to show is just over 200 days.

“While there’s still the online option for the sale, we’re hoping to get as many people as we can in person to support the kids — that would be amazing.”

Lentz said that even if you’re only able to stop in during your lunch break, “come back to the barns and see (the cattle) and talk to the kids about projects.”

The female classes will go May 2, starting at 5 p.m. and the steer classes will be held on May 3, starting at 9 a.m. The sale starts at 5:30 p.m. on May 3.

There are 10 female projects and 26 steer projects.

Bidding will be in-person and online through Vold Jones and Vold Auction Co. Ltd.

Online bidding will be through VJV’s website. The entire catalogue with pictures and videos will be available for viewing.

At the live event, the auction will be held in the ring with a live auctioneer.

Bid takers will be on hand to take bids from the crowd.

Online bids will be taken simultaneously and shown live in a screen inside the ring.

Prices will be per pound at live weight.

Supporting the auction shows the youth their hard work pays off and may even fund their project next year, the Ponoka District 4-H Beef Committee said in the program.

Others use the funds for post secondary school, expanding their herds, or other ambitions.

This year the proceeds from the charity steer will be split between the Ponoka Food Bank and the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
