Ponoka has a new lawyer whose focus will be on family law.

A bar admission ceremony was held at Ponoka Provincial Court on Friday, Dec. 3, for Zimbabwean immigrant and women’s advocate Tsitsi Chiwara.

After signing a certificate and being sworn in by the Hon. J.B. Mitchell, Chiwara, who came to Canada just over four years ago, officially joined the legal ranks.

Chiwara has been articling for the Ponoka law firm Paterson and Company Barristers and Solicitors since April, 2021.

Craig Paterson said he “couldn’t be more pleased” to present Chiwara for admission to the Alberta Bar, adding she will be “one of the best and brightest” in the province.

Chiwara had completed a bachelor of commerce as well as a bachelor of laws from the University of South Africa. Before immigrating to Canada, she was head of personnel and the legal compliance officer for an agency.

When she came to Canada, she began the process of obtaining her Canadian accreditation. During that time, she provided financial mentorship to women through various financial institutions.

She will practice law in Ponoka, Edmonton and surrounding areas.
