The Ponoka Pride Society and the Ponoka Jubilee Library are gearing up to host Pride in The Park at Ponoka’s Centennial Park on June 10 from 12 to 4 p.m.
The event for all ages will showcase an array of activities including games, kindness awards, an open mic on the main stage, a rainbow balloon arch, a best dressed contest, free hotdog barbecue, tea party, popcorn and cotton candy, glitter tattoos, chalk art, cupcakes, and so much more.
The Ponoka Pride Society was started by community members who helped ensure a Pride flag was raised in Ponoka in 2021. Now, they are hoping to bring a bigger and better community-wide event: Pride in Park.
“We want to foster a community, right here in Ponoka, where members of LGBTQ2S+ are celebrated, embraced and empowered to live authentically without discrimination,” said Ponoka Pride Society member, Jessica Jones.
“We think events like Pride in the Park are able to help enhance community engagement, eradicate prejudice, promote acceptance, and cultivate a culture of respect for all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions,” Jones added.
“And we are so happy to have amazing support from the Ponoka Jubilee Library and many sponsors in our community.”
About Ponoka Pride Society
The grassroots organization was started by dedicated volunteers and members under the Ponoka Pride and Community GSA. It was founded in 2021 after Ponoka officially raised its first Pride flag on June 28, 2021 at the Old Fire Hall.
