Ponoka RCMP are reminding drivers that school zones came back into effect with the start of the new school year and advise that speeders will be ticketed.

“All school zones are getting some proactive attention,” said Ponoka RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Smiley, adding the public can expect to see members out enforcing traffic laws.

School zone traffic enforcement stats from Sept. 23 to Oct. 13 resulted in 18 violation tickets and five warnings being issued.

Warnings consisted of various offences for non-speed related infractions (seat belt, vehicle documents, etc.) while violation tickets were almost solely for speed infractions, with one suspended driver.

A school zone that had a high number of infractions was Crestomere School, west of Ponoka on Hwy. 53.

Traffic enforcement remains a priority for the Ponoka RCMP and is “one of the pillars of our annual performance plan,” says Smiley.
