The Ponoka RCMP is taking part in Operation Cold Start this week to help remind Ponoka drivers of the dangers of leaving their vehicle unattended while running.
The project is being put on by the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police and members across the district will be working on the same project, from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6.
Ponoka RCMP officers will be out between the hours of 6 and 9 a.m. during these cold mornings.
“Essentially, we will be out and about searching for vehicles that are left unattended while idling, specifically with the keys in them and unlocked,” said Cpl. Phill Fortin of the Ponoka detachment.
Members will attempt to speak with with the registered owners of vehicles found unattended and give them tips for preventing theft of vehicles and personal items. There is also an information pamphlet officers will be handing out or leaving on vehicles, should the owner not be available.
“This project is by no means putting blame on anybody, it is simply an education piece as we do have a high numbers of thefts, damages and stolen vehicles around the area,” said Fortin.
