After you’ve seen the charming wooden truck, tractors and other creations carved by Ponoka resident Denis Chabot and heard the stories behind them, you may be tempted to take them home.
However, they are sadly not for sale.
Chabot makes the wooden pieces strictly as a hobby and for his grandchildren to play with when they visit, although he will occasionally put them out on display for his friends and neighbours to enjoy.
Chabot has a visual impairment, and uses powerful magnifying lenses and touch to form the charming cars. He has also made flower plants and other ornate pieces.
He started woodworking when he lived out on his farm, modeling them after tractors or trucks he had owned. He continued the hobby when he moved into Ponoka about seven years ago.
He uses all kinds of wood to make his sculptures from construction scraps he supplied with by a relative, and he shapes, stains or paints them himself.
