Alberta’s government is providing $10 million through budget 2023 to support food banks and food security programs, according to a press release dated April 11.
In November, 2022, Alberta’s government announced $20 million over two years to support food banks and related food security organizations across the province. To date, $10 million of that funding has been distributed to 210 organizations, including several central Alberta organizations.
Total funding province-wide was provided through three grant streams: Food Bank Grant ($2.8 million), Food Security Grant ($2.9 million) and Donation Matching Grant ($3.4 million).
The Food Bank Grant offers funding to all registered food banks in Alberta, the Food Security Grant allows unregistered food banks and related food security organizations to apply for funding, and the Donation Matching Grant enables Alberta’s government to match donations made to food banks and related organizations throughout December 2022.
In total, 210 organizations received funding through the three grant streams.
“For the families, seniors and other individuals struggling today, they can know that Alberta’s government is providing the help they need,” said Jeremy Nixon, minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services in a release.
“Continued investments into communities and non-profits are making a difference for thousands of Albertans.”
The following are the local organizations that benefited from the grant streams:
Food Bank Grants
- Ponoka Food Bank Association, $15,000;
- Bashaw and District Food Bank, $8,000;
- Alix Mirror Wellness Supports, $8,000;
- Lacombe Community Food Bank, $40,000;
- Rimbey Food Bank $8,000, Rimbey and,
- Samson Food Bank Society, $15,000.
Food Security Grants
- Ponoka Youth Centre Association, $10,000 and,
- Ermineskin Food Bank, $50,000;
Donation Matching Grants
- Ermineskin Food Bank, $8,700;
- Ponoka Food Bank Association, $20,948 and,
- Rimbey Community Home Help Services Association, $34,746.
