Despite uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ponoka Stampede, the iconic Cattle Raffle will continue next year.
“It’s just a tradition with a lot of fans. The tickets sold really well even during the pandemic,” said Ponoka Stampede board director Terry Jones.
Like other years, the winner of the grand prize will win their choice between 50 pasture-bred heifers or $75,000 in cash.
There will also be a $2,000 early bird prize drawing on May 13, 2022.
According to Jones, the Ponoka Stampede Association (PSA) will purchase the prized cattle around the beginning of April from a local rancher.
Those wishing to get tickets can purchase them at the Ponoka Stampede website or at Jones Boys Western Wear and Saddlery in Red Deer and Ponoka as well as at Cline Agro Services.
A total of 6,000 tickets will be printed. Each ticket is $50.
From June 28 to July 3, 10 finalists will be drawn each day and given their $50 back, with the final draw selecting a winner from 60 finalists.
The proceeds from the raffle will be used to pay for facility maintenance and improvements.
PSA president Jason Cline said he hopes the Stampede will take place in 2022.
“I’m excited to bring the community back together,” said Cline.
