Province encourages nominations for highest award

There are many great leaders that make a lasting difference in Ponoka

There are many great leaders that make a lasting difference in Ponoka. They have achieved great things and have impacted the community in some positive way. The province of Alberta is encouraging its citizens to help them recognize these outstanding individuals by nominating them for the Alberta Order of Excellence.

“The AOE medal is a way to recognize outstanding people who have achieved great things in the service of their fellow Albertans and all Canadians,” said the Honourable Norman L. Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta and Chancellor of the Order in a press release. “It’s also a way to ensure that future generations are able to learn from and take pride in their stories.”

The last day to submit a nomination is Feb. 15, 2009 for consideration for this year. Nominations that are handed in after this date and those that are not selected for 2009 may be held over and considered for future membership in the Alberta Order of Excellence.

“AOE members come from every corner of the province. They represent all walks of life and a wide range of professions,” said Dr. Robert Westbury, Chair of the Order of Excellence Council in a press release. “The one thing they all share is a singular focus on using the best of their abilities to make a powerful and lasting difference in the lives of others. The Council always looks forward to hearing about extraordinary Albertans and their accomplishments.”

Those who are nominated must be Canadian citizens currently living in Alberta and, if selected, must be able to attend the ceremony that will be held in October. Albertans can not nominate themselves, their partner or a member of their family.
