Ponoka Sheriff Nathan Kardish said Thanksgiving was quiet.

“I’m thankful that there were no collisions during the Thanksgiving long weekend.”

Ponoka RCMP and sheriffs were however busy every day conducting laser operations. Kardish said there was a high volume of traffic, which appeared to slow down vacationers, but they did stop one vehicle for allegedly travelling 170 km/h.

Collision on Highway 2A

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Oct.11, Ponoka RCMP, along with the Lacombe Fire department and EMS investigated a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 2A at Secondary Highway 604.

The collision involved a silver Hyundai Accent and a black Subaru Legacy. The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Hyundai was traveling northbound on Highway 2A when he went to make a left turn and collided with the southbound Subaru. The male driver of each vehicle was transported to Lacombe Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other occupants in either vehicle.

As a result of the collision, the black Subaru caught on fire. The RCMP acknowledge a group of CP Rail employees who were near the area at the time of the collision and helped to extinguish the fire.

Alcohol and speed are not considered to be factors in the collision.
