Rimbey cops zero in on chop-shop operation

Individuals charged to appear in Rimbey court Dec. 7

  • Nov. 15, 2018 10:30 a.m.

In the last week, Rimbey RCMP responded to 30 calls for service. The files include but are not limited to: four suspicious person or vehicle files, 3 assault reports, and one impaired driver file.

Readers may recall a report from early October, 2018 in which a complaint of a suspicious trailer on private property resulted in the execution of a search warrant and the recovery of several stolen properties. Properties recovered included vehicles and firearms. Further investigation led police to suspect an automotive chop-shop operation. Rimbey RCMP are able to update the public that formal charges have been laid against the four individuals involved with this matter. Charges range from possession of stolen property to unlawful possession of firearms. One individual is facing 8 charges, while the other three are facing upwards of 30 charges each. They are scheduled to appear in Rimbey court on December 7th, 2018.

On November 7th, a male was arrested on an outstanding warrant as officers responded to the report of an assault in which he was allegedly involved. When RCMP arrived to the residence, the male in question appeared to have attempted to escape out of the house to avoid the officers. His escape attempt, however, was ultimately foiled as he was not wearing any shoes or socks when he left the residence. The male, likely suffering from a case of cold feet, was caught by an officer outside of the residence and was taken into custody. He is to appear for court in Rocky Mountain House on November 21, 2018.

On November 11th, an officer responded to a complaint of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 53. Upon arrival the officer found a pick-up truck in the ditch, fairly deep in the bushes and barely visible from the road. The officer suspected the driver to be impaired by alcohol and transported the driver back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. The driver was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and is scheduled to appear for court in Rimbey on January 4th, 2019.

As the end of November is quickly approaching, Rimbey Victim Services would like to remind everyone about the 1st Annual Charity Checkstop happening on November 28th. Held in partnership with Rimbey RCMP, the Ponoka County West District Fire Department, and Rimbey Citizens on Patrol, the Checkstop is designed to collect donations of non-perishable food items, new unwrapped toys, or cash to be donated to the Rimbey Food Bank to help families during the holiday season. Check it out between 11:00am and 2:00pm on 50th Avenue near the 49th Street intersection.
