One worker is in serious condition after he fell from a certain height at a construction site near Ponoka.

The incident occurred around noon on Oct. 29 east of Ponoka on land where a building was being constructed.

It was serious enough that STARS Air Ambulance was called in to transport the patient. The chopper landed right at the construction site.

According to STARS communications, the STAR-3 chopper was dispatched at 12:06 p.m. to, “…assist a 43-year-old male who had suffered traumatic injuries as a result of a significant fall.”

He was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital and his condition was not known at the time of publication.

Alberta Labour’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) investigators were called in to investigate the incident at 12:30 p.m. A stop work order has been implemented, explained Trent Bancarz, spokesperson for Alberta Labour.

He confirmed that the worker fell from a height and that the injuries were believed to be serious, although he couldn’t confirm the type of injuries or severity.

The company in charge of the project must ensure it complies and follows procedures for working from heights before any work can continue.

Bancarz said the injury was on a building project on a farm, but was not farm-related work. He added that it is not clear at this time who the worker is employed with as construction sites often use contractors and sub-contractors.

OHS officers attended the site the same day of the incident and will continue to investigate all avenues as each case can be different.

OHS investigates workplace incidents when there is a serious injury or a death. The agency was notified by the company in charge of the site of the incident.

The Ponoka County East District Fire Department was called to the scene to assist EMS.
