Teens charged in attempted robbery in Ponoka.

Ponoka RCMP have charged three males after attempting to steal a man's car.

Ponoka RCMP have charged three males one youth and two 18-year-olds after an attempted robbery of a man’s vehicle.

The incident occurred Nov. 16 at approximately 5 a.m. after reports that a man was outside of his car when the three individuals attempted to steal his vehicle, say police.

Police add the victim was able to scare off two suspects but one remained where he allegedly assaulted the victim with a weapon, although it is unclear what that weapon was.

The suspects did not steal the vehicle.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and subsequently released.

Ponoka police dog services and the general investigation section were mobilized and the Maskwacis RCMP assisted in the investigation.

As a result, the Ponoka RCMP identified and located the three individuals, who were arrested and brought into custody without incident.

One youth has been charged with robbery, assault and fail to comply with conditions. Under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, his name cannot be released.

Chase Brown, 18, of Maskwacis has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and three counts of failing to comply with conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Provincial court in Ponoka on Nov. 18.

EMS called to man choking

RCMP and members of the Ponoka Fire Department were called to assist EMS Nov. 18 after a call of a man choking at a downtown restaurant. Despite their best efforts the man passed away as a result of the incident.

Police investigate gang-related shootings

Maskwacis RCMP are investigating what they call two gang-related shootings over the weekend.

Police say the incidents occurred Nov. 19 and 20 on the Samson Cree Nation. In both incidents a person was shot after suspects shot a firearm towards a residence.

Two victims received treatment at the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre for non-life threatening injuries.

Due to the indiscriminate nature of the shootings, say police, both crimes posed a significant safety risk to innocent people. After one shooting, a bullet narrowly missed a 15-month-old infant. Police believe that both shootings are the result of increased tension between rival gangs.

The RCMP say they are concerned for the public’s safety and remind residents to be careful. Allowing gang members or gang associates into a residence whether or not they are family, increases the risk to their personal safety and to the safety of their loved ones, say police.

Wanted man remanded in custody

Maskwacis RCMP have arrested Allan Soosay, an individual wanted for a murder investigation and assault of a 22-year-old man on Nov. 11 in Maskwacis.

Police say Soosay was arrested in Wetaskiwin on charges of assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm Nov. 18 and has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 1 in Wetaskiwin.
