The following are brief items of interest from the Town of Ponoka’s July 9 regular council meeting.

Public forum

Resident David MacPherson suggested to town council that it should have a back up plan next year for Canada Day, so if it gets rained out, it can be held indoors. He also said there should have been better notification of the cancellation.

Mayor Rick Bonnet thanked him for his comments and said a plan is underway for next year.

“We will continue to be better at that,” said Bonnett.

Some of the events from Canada Day will be held on Aug. 23 at Day in the Park, to make up for the cancellation.

Bryce Bennett asked the town to consider keeping the town dump open for an extra day from May to October, as it is the busy season for contractors and people doing yard work.

Paving and concrete improvement program

The Town of Ponoka approved a budget of $450,000 for its 2019 pavement improvement program and $97,000 for its 2019 concrete improvement program. The paving contract was awarded to Border Paving Ltd. and the concrete contract was awarded to Proform Concrete Services.

The programs identify priorities for maintenance and improvement.

Locations identified for paving work in 2019 are 38 St. from 48 Ave. to Hwy. 53, 54 Ave. extending east of 60 St., 44 st. to 36 Ave, 58 Ave. to 51 St., 52 Ave. to 63 Sr. 60 Ave. to Hwy. 2A and 4215 63 St. in front of ATCO Gas.

The locations will either have pavement replaced, or patched with asphalt or chip sealing, depending on the needs identified for each.

Curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements will be done at six locations: 5120 50 Ave., 5532 4 Ave., 4209 63 St., 5013 49 Ave., 5213 59 Ave. and 5104 56 Ave.

Three bids were received. One from TBL Construction Ltd. was lower, but was rejected because it was missing required information.

The tender also required companies to have a Certificate of Recognition (COR) certification, which ruled out local companies.

Bonnett suggested that in future when the town uses non-local contractors, that they ask for a sponsorship or donation to a community group in return for a contract —“Something returned from these companies because we keep giving them these nice contracts,” he said, calling it, “good corporate citizenship.”

Budget deliberation dates

Town council approved Nov. 20 and 21 for its 2020 budget deliberations.
