The Town of Ponoka advised in a press release July 20 that it is unable to provide a town-wide pick up of trees and branches from private properties after the storm last weekend.

On July 16, the storm that swept through Ponoka left many broken branches and debris behind. After assessing its resources, in consideration with upcoming coming through Ponoka, the town determined it was unable to proceed with a town-wide clean up.

In the event there is another storm, the town has assigned its crews to priority clean up of roadways, boulevards and town-owned properties to avoid the potential drainage issues and future flooding.

“The town appreciates the efforts of residents who take pride in their community and are actively cleaning up their properties,” stated the release.

The town is reminding residents they are able to bring compostable yard waste free of charge to the town’s Waste Transfer Station (northeast of the corporate limits on 46 Street).

Compostable yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, plant debris, sod and branches.

Citizens are asked not to use grey carts or green carts to transport yard waste to the Waste Transfer Station.

The Waste Transfer Station does not accept kitchen waste for its compost pile as the facility is not set up to compost that type of material. Kitchen waste can only be composted through the curbside green cart program where the waste is transported to an approved composting site.

The Waste Transfer Station is currently on summer hours until Oct. 31 and is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For more information, please visit www.ponoka.ca/p/waste-transfer-station or call the Waste Transfer Station at 403-783-8328.

Compostable yard waste can also be disposed of through the curbside green cart collection program. However, tree or shrub branches must be less than one inch in diameter and less than three feet in length to be placed in the green cart.

A complete list of what can be composted curbside in green carts is posted on the Town website at www.ponoka.ca/p/green-carts.
