Two men from Maskwacis are facing second degree murder charges after a man died earlier this week.

Edward Vincent Crier, 31, and Louie Albert Thom, 33, both from Maskwacis were arrested on July 22 and officially charged.

On July 21 shortly after 5 p.m., Maskwacis RCMP officers attended a residence on the Samson Cree Nation to assist ambulance crews with a man who had been assaulted.

That man, now identified by RCMP as Benjamin Morin from Maskwacis, was taken to hospital where was pronounced deceased.

The Maskwacis RCMP called in the major crimes unit to take over and their investigation led to the charges in what police are calling a homicide.

Bail hearings were held for both accused. Each were denied release and remain in custody.

Crier was scheduled to appear July 24 in Ponoka Provincial Court, while Thom was slated to appear July 28 in Wetaskiwin Provincial Court.
