.

Two men from the Ponoka area were hospitalized with serious injuries after their vehicles collided head-on just west of Ponoka on Highway 53 Sunday night.

Ponoka RCMP say around 7 p.m. a small car driven by an 18-year-old man was eastbound on Highway 53 and collided with a westbound minivan driven by a 47-year-old man.

The 18-year-old was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to a hospital in Edmonton for serious injuries. The 47-year-old man was also transported to the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.

RCMP Const. Karolina Malik said the collision is under investigation. Alcohol is not considered a factor.

Highway 53 was blocked off for a few hours and traffic was rerouted to Highway 2A.
