A 43-year old male from Ponoka is dead after a single vehicle rollover on Hwy 2A, 14 kilometers south of Ponoka on March 30. The man’s name has not yet been released.

RCMP believe that a red 1993 GMC Sierra was traveling southbound on Hwy2A, approached a curve, lost control, rolled and came to rest on its roof in the west ditch. The lone male driver was ejected from the vehicle and it is believed that he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and alcohol is believed to be involved.

Alcohol is also believed to be a factor in a two-vehicle collision on March 27 near Ponoka. The Ponoka RCMP were dispatched at approximately 7:20 p.m. on a complaint of a possible impaired driver traveling in a pick-up truck southbound on Hwy 2 at the Bear Hills Truck Stop.

Police located the vehicle and observed it for approximately two kilometers north of the Hwy 53 overpass but before police could intercept the truck it entered the median, into the northbound lane striking a northbound semi-tractor trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer unit was transported to the Ponoka General Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The two male occupants of the pick-up truck were also transported to PGH. The male driver was later transported by STARS air ambulance to the University of Alberta Hospital and the male passenger was transported to the Red Deer Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The matter is still under investigation.
