Two people are dead after an SUV lost control and collided with another vehicle travelling the opposite direction.

The Blackfalds RCMP and emergency services have cleared from a three-vehicle collision on Highway 11 which resulted in the collision.

At 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 4, Blackfalds RCMP were dispatched to a serious collision on Highway 11 between Range Roads 283 and 284. Initial indications suggest that an SUV travelling eastbound lost control and collided with an SUV travelling westbound. A car travelling westbound struck the two SUVs.

The two female occupants of the eastbound SUV were declared deceased on scene. The two occupants of the westbound SUV were transported to the hospital and the driver, and lone occupant, of the car was treated on scene.

The RCMP collision analyst attended to conduct a scene examination and traffic was diverted for approximately five hours. The highway is now open for travel in both directions.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation but icy road conditions are a factor.

Area highways remain in poor driving condition.
