Ponoka RCMP are investigating a fatality due to a single vehicle collision that occurred Feb. 25 west of Ponoka.
The 35-year-old male driver died as a result of the rollover that occurred on Highway 53 and Range Road 262.
The SUV was southbound on Range Road 262 where it appears the driver lost control and failed to stop at the Stop Sign at Highway 53.
The vehicle went off road, rolling multiple times. The driver from Vancouver was the lone occupant in the vehicle and was pronounced deceased on scene. It is believed the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was ejected from the vehicle.
Police say road conditions were poor at the time of the collision due to being covered in snow and ice. It is believed that alcohol was not a factor in this incident.
The name of the driver will not be released by RCMP.
Unauthorized driver in collision
On Feb. 21 the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 2 just past the Ponoka overpass.
A black SUV was northbound when it approached a semi-tractor unit. The driver of the SUV went to pass the semi and noticed that there was a vehicle beside him.
When the driver of the SUV went to pull back into the driving lane he hit the bumper of the semi unit and the two vehicles stuck together. There were no injuries reported.
A 39-year-old man from Delburne was charged with driving while unauthorized, careless driving and have an uninsured vehicle on the highway. He is to appear in court May 11.
Homeowner interrupts attempted theft
On Feb. 19 the Ponoka RCMP responded to a complaint of an attempted theft from a back yard on 65 Avenue.
An unknown suspect attempted to steal a snowmobile by dragging it out of the yard but the suspect was interrupted by the home owner. Police are investigating.
Abandoned vehicle stolen
On Feb. 19 the RCMP responded to a report of abandoned vehicle on 50 Avenue in Morningside.
A maroon Ford pickup was located by the railroad tracks. The back window was smashed out and the dash was ripped apart.
Upon investigation it was found that the vehicle was stolen out of Fort Saskatchewan. File under investigation.
Wallet taken from vehicle
On Feb. 21 investigators responded to a complaint of a vehicle break-in.
The complainant noticed three youths going through the vehicle searching for items and a wallet was stolen from the vehicle. File is currently under investigation.
Abandoned trailer with VLTs
On Feb. 22 the RCMP responded to a complaint of an abandoned trailer stuck in the ditch by the Wolf Creek Golf Resort.
Upon investigation it was found that the trailer contained VLT machines and was stolen out of Red Deer. Red Deer RCMP are investigating.
Check Stop
On Feb. 17 the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit conducted a Check Stop on Highway 2A and 53 Avenue, and on 54 Street and 57 Avenue.
Ten vehicles were checked and a total of eight charges were laid — five driver/passenger seatbelts, two distracted driving/cell phone use, and one other charge under the Traffic Safety Act.
Later in the afternoon they completed a laser operation on Highway 2 northbound at Matejka Road with Wetaskwin Traffic Services. Tickets issued were 10 for speeding, one for a Gaming and Liquor Act, and then five criminal code charges laid on one individual.
