WCPS Rock the Diploma sessions will go ahead, but buses cancelled

Jan. 16 board meeting briefs

The following are brief items of interest from Wolf Creek Public School’s board meeting on Jan. 16.

Rock the Diploma

The board heard a report regarding Rock the Diploma, which are intensive sessions that prep students for diploma exams. There are 453 high school students registered for Rock the Diploma sessions in January, an increase again over previous years.

NOTE: According to WCPS’s Facebook page, “the Rock the Diploma bus scheduled to transport students from Rimbey and Ponoka to the Rock the Diploma preparation sessions in Lacombe on Friday January 17, Saturday January 18 and Sunday January 19, has been cancelled.

The Rock the Diploma sessions will proceed as planned, and students registered for the session are encouraged to attend, but the bus for students will not be running.”

MLA Luncheon

The board reviewed plans to host a luncheon with local MLAs on Feb. 7, to discuss education in Wolf Creek Public Schools.

Poverty simulation

The board confirmed its commitment to host a poverty simulation with partnering municipalities on March 6, 2020, to be held in Bentley.

PSBAA award nomination

The board is nominating the Central Alberta Regional Consortium (CARC) for the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta’s (PSBAA) Special Contribution to Public School Education Award. CARC works to facilitate and support, through collaborative networks, the learning opportunities for all individuals and groups having an impact on student learning in central Alberta.

Terrace Ridge Grade Configuration Update

The Board received an update on the Terrace Ridge School Grade Configuration consultation process. The process has included superintendent meetings with Terrace Ridge staff and Grade 6 and 7 students, and a Thoughtexchange for parents, community members, students, and staff. Consultation results will be presented to Terrace Ridge School Council and staff later in January.
