Beautiful yards and gardens in Ponoka and Ponoka County were up against the best in this year’s Landscaping and Vegetable Garden Competition as part of the Ponoka County Fair. The competition, hosted by the Ponoka Agricultural Society, was judged according to a point system and anyone could enter their treasured garden, yard or water garden.

To stop violence from occurring there needs to be fewer weapons on the streets and that is exactly what Hobbema is hoping to do. Starting on Aug. 1 to Nov. 30 Hobbema residents can safely hand over their illegal or unwanted firearms and ammunition to RCMP.

The Ponoka Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion lawn was filled with cars of all shapes and sizes during the Ultimate Ponoka Car Show hosted by the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce. The Ultimate Ponoka Car Show was fun for everyone who attended. The event was put on by the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce and had great attendance at all events on July 26 and 27.

Staff Reporter Members of the Hobbema RCMP discovered the body of a 16 year-old male after they responded to a gun complaint on July 27 at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the Samson Townsite in Hobbema.

Albertans who receive Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) will now be able to earn more money and still remain eligible for financial assistance. On July 21 it was announced that the upper limit of the employment exemption formula increased by $500 to $1,500 per month for single AISH clients and to $2,500 per month for couples and clients with children.

The Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury has been a part of Ponoka for many years and a valuable facility both locally and nationally. The Centre prides itself on its outstanding care and attention to all patients who have suffered from brain injury and those with psychiatric disorders.

Five people were taken to hospitals following a two vehicle collision on July 27. The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Hwy 2 one mile north of Ponoka when a driver stopped on the side of the road and attempted to cross both lanes. The elderly male driver was struck by an oncoming vehicle and taken to a hospital in Edmonton by STARS Ambulance.

The tree that has been Ponoka’s place for retreat, solice, family photos and imaginative adventures will be recognized for its uniqueness and importance in a new book. The Heritage Trees of Alberta Foundation is releasing a large collection of stunning trees in the province in a book titled Heritage Trees of Alberta.
