JJ Collett gives hands on learning

Fresh air, spring blossoms and wildlife are continuously being enjoyed at the JJ Collett Centre by many students from Ponoka and surrounding areas. The JJ Collett Educational program involves approximately 17 classes of 425 students from Ponoka, Lacombe, Blackfalds and other nearby areas.

Charges laid

The Ponoka RCMP have charged a male in relation to the sexual assault/home invasion that occurred on May 25. The person was arrested between June 14 and 15 and has been remanded in custody until his hearing, which is scheduled for Ponoka Provincial Court on June 20 according to Sgt. Glenn Demaere of the Ponoka RCMP.

Town flushes out hydrants

Fire hydrants in Ponoka will be flushed out over the next two or three months to help maintain the efficiency of fire hydrants. The Town of Ponoka Waterworks department annually flushes out all fire hydrants in the town to ensure that they will work properly in case there is a fire.

Stunning performance of Aladdin by St.A’s

The St.Augustine School’s performance of Disney’s Aladdin Jr. was well staged, very well performed and overall an excellent musical. The St.A’s Theatre Studies Program put on the production from June 5 to 8 at the high school gymnasium. The students rehearsed the play for approximately an hour every other day and their practice paid off.

SAAN stores across Canada are having a going-out-of-business sale, which is being conducted by Great American LLC Group and Hudson Capital Partners LLC. This includes the SAAN store in Ponoka located on 51st St.

PCHS closed due to threats and fight forces lockdown

Ponoka Composite High School had two situations involving the RCMP last week. On June 6 the school received generic threats against the school. RCMP reported that the threats arose from the fight that occurred at the school on June 4. At the time a joint decision was made between the Wolf Creek Public School Board and the Ponoka Detachment of the RCMP to close the school and send the students home.

Assault in Ponoka

The Ponoka RCMP are investigating a sexual assault/home invasion that occurred on May 25 at approximately 11:30 p.m. in Ponoka. An unknown male suspect gained entry to the victim’s residence via an unlocked side door. The female victim suffered minor injuries as a result of the attack. Cpl. Geoff Buxcey of the Ponoka RCMP assures residents that the town is still safe. He says that police are not releasing the location of the incident for the protection of the victim.

Ponoka teacher receives provincial award

Hard work, passion and many hours of teaching has awarded Catherine Knudskoc, a teacher at the Ponoka Alternative Supports School (PASS), with the 2008 Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award.
