NEWMAN. Alice (nee Anderson)

June 4, 1922 - November 17, 2008

Alice Sylvia Newman of Calgary passed away on November 17, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Alice was born on June 4, 1922 at Yeoford, Alberta to Adolf and Sophia Anderson, and was the younger sister of Merle and Alden. She was baptized on June 28, 1923, and married Edwin Newman on June 18, 1942 in Ponoka. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage before the Lord called Ed home on January 25, 1988 after a battle with cancer. Alice was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her daughters, Adena (Cameron) Bauer of Calgary, Pearl (Gordon) Kroening of Ponoka; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Eric) Anhorn, Cory (Virginia) Neddo, and Patricia (Vitto) Basile; great nephews and nieces, and sisters-in-law. ‘Gran’ enjoyed baking; pies, cookies, and angel food cake were her specialty, and she was always willing to bring something tasty to a gathering, as she loved being a part of family get-togethers. Gran was always looking for the perfect pumpkin so she could make her famous pumpkin pie, and when Grandpa was still living, they would travel to B.C. and bring back fruit- especially apples- which she would use to make apple pie. There was always a pie or some cookies sitting on the cupboard ready to share with visitors. Gran loved to knit and sew, and shared her beautiful handiwork with the family. She had a love for animals (especially horses and dogs), and enjoyed walking, being outside, and bird watching. Gran’s favourite flower was the rose, but she loved all flowers. She especially enjoyed working in the garden, attending the Farmers’ Market, and canning fruit in the early fall. Gran enjoyed listening to Gospel music, and had a special love for old tyme music played in the fiddle, as she often reminisced about barn dances and growing up on the homestead. Both Ed and Alice were very involved with the Loyal Order of Moose (Ponoka Chapter) for many years, with Alice being an active member of the Women of the Moose. She was employed with the Alberta Hospital in Ponoka for 28 years, and retired in 1987. She moved to Calgary in 1991 and enjoyed the last 3 years at Harris House where she had some close friends with whom she loved to play cards and go sightseeing. Alice was predeceased by an infant son, Lloyd, her husband Ed, both parents, and her two brothers. A memorial service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ponoka on Friday, November 21, 2008 at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor David Schumacher presiding. Interment took place at Forest Home Cemetery.
