Arthur Douglas Hadden Nicol a.k.a. "Scotty" was born on March 4, 1928 in Aberdeen, Scotland. At the age of 22 years he ventured to Canada. After a chance meeting and quick courtship, he married the "love of (his) life" Jean. They made their home in Ponoka and were blessed with three children. Their family expanded some more to include 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Scotty was a veteran in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was proud to be a Psychiatric Nurse, worked as a pioneer in community mental health and retired as area clinic manager. Scotty was a proud Scot and ensured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were influenced in his heritage, but he was also a very proud Canadian. He enjoyed camping, visiting with friends, training/riding horses and caring for his pets. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Light Horse Association and Burn’s Club. Scotty will always be remembered for being a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a passionate Oilers and Eskimos fan, a good friend, and an inspiring mentor. Scotty passed away peacefully on March 18, 2009. He will be always loved and greatly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, Jean; his children Kimberley (Garry) Cline, Janet (Brad) Blain and Ian (Debbie) Nicol; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jennifer (Brandon), Lochlan and Liam Bishop, Sheena (Stirling) and Bexson Fox, Douglas (Debbie) Cline, Colin (Tara), Nolan and Teagan Cline; Jenneth Mills, Johathan (Angelina) Mills; Adam, Logan, Kayla and Shelby Nicol; his friend and caregiver John Gil Bautista as well as his friends and past colleagues. A Memorial Service was held on March 21, 2009 at the Ponoka Funeral Home with Pastor David Schumacher officiating with a celebration of Scotty’s life held at the Royal Canadian Legion. Donations in Scotty’s memory may be made to S.T.A.R.S., the Royal Canadian Legion or any charity of your choice.
