Bert Stang previously of Ponoka passed away at the age of 91 years after a lengthy illness on March 17, 2018 at the Red Deer Hospice.

He was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan on January 31, 1927 where the Stang family farmed until they moved to Ponoka in 1942.

As well as grain farming and livestock, Bert and his brothers worked for their father's carpentry business. They built many barns in the area and a good number of them are still standing today. They also ran a sawmill and lumber yard and cleared many sections of land for themselves and also for other farmers in the area.

Bert also raised horses and was an expert horseman. He spent a lot of time breaking horses and training them to be saddlehorses and also draft horses.Later he raised pure-bred quarter horses and also had a pair of pinto ponies that he raced in the pony chariot races at many rodeos.

In 1979 Bert married his wife Katherine and instantly became a stepfather to her four children and grandfather to, at that time, four grandkids.This number eventually grew to become nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bert is lovingly remembered by wife Katherine, and her children Allan Knight (Karen), Leonard Knight (Brenda) and Carolyn Long (Randy). As well as their children Reagan Knight, Angela Sheppard (Rob), Whitney St Arnaud (Scott), Michael Knight, Murray Knight, Tracy Maher, Lisa Long and Ryan Long (Kim). Great-grandchildren Jessica Kerr, Hannah Long, Logan Maher, Charlotte St Arnaud and Brandon Sheppard.

Bert is survived by brothers and sisters Albert Stang (Jeannette) Alphonse Stang, Leo Stang (Judy) and Georgina Morrical (Gordon) and many, many nieces and nephews

.A celebration of life luncheon will be held Friday, March 23 at 2pm at the Ponoka Legion. Friends and family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be make to Alberta SPCA
